52 Experiments

The colours that go down first don't really matter as the composition will change with the addition of different layers and applications of paint and other media. Having said that this particular arrangement of colours I found pleasing though it has now disappeared under other layers.

51 Working without a plan

I like to start off with no plan in mind but just to let the marks flow and only later on to decide if I want it to represent a mood, location or whatever. This picture started with black and white inks, graphite and then paint after making sketches at a rock outcrop in Grasmere.

50 Wild landscape

My favourite way to paint. Areas of colour, different mark making, different tones. How it is interpreted is up to the individual. Does it need to be interpreted?

49 Wild weather

Battered once again by a storm so broad brush strokes seem the order of the day.

48 Through the window

The same series as yesterday's image with collage but without the drawing this time. It perhaps needs a bit more focus.

47 Almost a still life

My usual abstract background but with collage and a gestural drawing on top. Essence of cafetière, the way I like to draw.

46 Minimalist view

There's something satisfying about creating something with the minimum of strokes. This isn't necessarily finished but I feel it says what it wants to already.

45 It's all in the detail

A small part of a larger piece once again as an idea for a full size painting (whatever that means!). I like the deep dark corner, offset by the richness of the gold. Not sure about the turquoise. It's certainly too central at the moment.

44 The ugly stage

Lots of pictures go through a stage when you feel like tearing them up, as with this one. But experience tells me that if I persevere and apply a few more layers even the worst painting can be transformed. There is no guarantee but nothing ventured nothing gained.

43 Detail as a composition in itself

It's fun to search through paintings to find a subsection which creates a balanced picture in its own right and maybe form the basis of the next full size painting.
